DL Arch + Design is known for solving design and planning problems with creative approaches. We spoke with Principal Designer Daneyka Lazier about food, Panama, and The Hobbit.

Q&A With Daneyka Lazier

Casaza: How did you get your start?
Daneyka Lazier:
I am originally from Panama, a small Central American country, and came to Canada as an international student to develop my English language skills in order to pursue my design focused education goals. While studying interior design, I was fortunate enough to work as an industrial designer, design consultant and interior decorator at different firms.

This was where my first real-life taste of architecture occurred, and it ended up sparking me to further pursue an Architectural Technologist designation that provided me with great hard skills to complement my creative design side. I then worked for Scotiabank as a designer focused on creating and building commercial and corporate office interiors and ended up pursuing my entrepreneurial dreams when I opened DL Arch + Design Inc. two years ago.

C: How would you describe your style?
DL:
Given my Panamanian background and the architecture of my country, I love colonial contemporary spaces. That said, I also must say I have a passion for modern, minimal, clean lines with a classic touch. I love elegant spaces that have that effortless look.

C: Where do you get new ideas and inspiration?
DL:
I get some of my ideas and inspirations from fashion, but most come from traveling and experiencing new places around the world.

C: Favorite room in the house?
DL:
The kitchen, hands down. Food is what brought us all together growing up as my mom is the queen of entertaining and my most memorable family times were around the kitchen table breaking bread. Also, did I tell you that I love cooking? I’m a total foodie.

C: Design rule you don’t subscribe to?
DL:
“Design to be timeless.” Although I agree with some of the statement, I think people tend to be afraid of having fun with their interiors in order to subscribe to this rule. I think it’s okay to be bold and have fun with at least one room of your home.

C: Recent project that inspired you?
DL:
I recently finished designing a condominium for a young couple that gave me lots of creative freedom. It was fun as they enjoyed the design process and were willing to make bold decisions that in the end resulted in a terrific interior that matched their easygoing personalities.

C: Favorite texture/pattern/color?
DL:
Great question. My favorite color is green, especially when accompanied by natural fiber textures. The combination of these two elements reminds me of my Panamanian tropical roots while also creating a soothing and relaxed environment.

C: What is “good design” to you?
DL:
Good design to me must contain the seven principles of interior design: unity, balance, rhythm, emphasis, contrast, scale/proportion, and details. If you stick to these basic principles, almost any space will end up looking true to your vision.

C: Pack your bag! You’re moving into a famous home. Whose is it?
DL:
Hah! I would definitely want to live in a fictional home where someone let their creativity fly. How about Frodo’s house from The Hobbit? I think it was a very creative concept and who wouldn’t want to live in a quaint home buried in a hillside in New Zealand? I may not want to live there forever, but it would certainly be an experience!

C: What’s your rule when entertaining?
DL:
Eat, drink and laugh! No other rules as it’s all about having fun.

C: Best advice for DIYers?
DL:
DIY certainly has its place around the home for small tasks but for larger more sophisticated renovations I would always suggest you hire a professional. This will ensure your larger projects are hopefully completed on-time, on budget and with the professional look are you are going after. Don’t take on more than you can handle 😊

C: Best advice for those hiring a pro?
DL:
Outside of the basics such as ensuring you complete the proper due diligence when hiring a professional (i.e. references, past work etc…), I would say that clients need to have faith in the design process and the capabilities of those they engage. Often, it’s difficult to see the planned vision of the finished project when all you see is a construction site. Not to worry as all projects come together at the end!

C: What is one design trend are you most excited about this season?
DL:
Bringing the outdoors in!

C: How do you take your coffee?
DL:
I’m actually a tea drinker. I love English breakfast with a splash of lactose-free milk and a hint of raw brown sugar.
